A AMESTECURILOR
While the diesel explosion has been taking place over the last two or three years, a quiet revolution has also been taking place in petrol cars. Aside from the addition of electronics and other ancillary systems, direct injection has started to get a grip on the petrol engine market and today we have really entered the age of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI). That mechanical direct-injection system was very complicated, however, and placed extreme demands on the engine materials, making for a short service life.
GDI systems are characterised by the injection of fuel at high pressure directly into the combustion chamber by specially developed injectors. Like the DI diesel engine, the finely atomised fuel and air meet inside the cylinder, and not in the manifold as in the traditional system. During the induction stroke of the piston only combustion air flows past the open intake valve and into the cylinder.
GDI's electronic control allows the fuel to be injected in two different ways, according to the engine's operating requirement. With high output demand, fuel is injected so that the air/fuel mixture is evenly distributed throughout the combustion chamber - homogeneous operation. With low output demand, a smaller, more concentrated air/fuel mixture cloud is formed around the spark plug - lean-burn or stratified-charge operation. During stratified-charge operation, the remainder of the cylinder is filled with either freshly drawn-in air or the inert gas that has been returned to the cylinder by the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.
