One of the most controversial and frail subjects in the Communist era was freedom: the freedom of speech, the freedom of press, the freedom of choice. Rock music in those times was an instrument through which artists expressed their dissapproval regarding the regime and the will of freedom. Romania and Russia, two countries facing the restrictions and suppressions of those times, created nonetheless rock music that challenged the Western rock music through profound lyrics and intense national substrate up to the present time.
