A hang glider flies by the same principles that apply to any other aircraft. The sail fills during flight to form an aerofoil section through the chord of the wing. Airflow round the aerofoil section creates lift on the upper surface of the wing - racing - climbing - surfing - sailing - sailing is a lot better than swimming. For one thing, it is more exciting.
